1955 Double Die Penny

A strange thing happened at the Philadelphia mint in 1955. One or more of the dies used to strike coins of the Lincoln cent series were prepared incorrectly, and were subsequently used to mint an error version of the Lincoln penny, thus creating a doubling effect on the obverse and giving birth to perhaps the most popular error coin in American numismatics history: the 1955 Double Die Penny.

The 1955 Double Die penny shows itself as a seemingly normal Lincoln cent. Upon closer examination, though, the 1955 Double Die Penny shows a dramatic doubling of the letters and numbers on the obverse, or front, of the coin. The 1955 Double Die Penny is not the first, nor the last, coin to have been minted from an incorrectly prepared die in the Lincoln Cent series. the 1955 Double Die Penny isn’t even the rarest or most valuable of the double die pennies from the Lincoln Cent series, as that distinction belongs to the 1969 Double Die Penny. The 1955 Double Die Penny is, however, the most popular and that makes it a very sought after coin.

Part of the reason for the huge popularity of the 1955 Double Die Penny is the media hype that surrounded the discovery of the 1955 Double Die Penny. It is unknown what number of the rare 1955 Double Die Penny escaped the Philadelphia mint but educated estimates put the number at around forty to fifty thousand. That number may seem like a lot but in numismatic scales, it is a very low mintage.

Many initial discoveries of the 1955 Double Die Penny happened in the New England area and, more specifically, the 1955 Double Die Penny was found in abundance coming from cigarette vending machines in the area. Since most specimens of the 1955 Double Die Penny were released into circulation, the number of mint state examples of the 1955 Double Die Penny is considerably less than the estimated amount of existing coins.

The 1955 double die is certainly worth having examined by a numismatic professional since many counterfeits have been discovered right along side the authentic versions. Great family run store. I’m well taken care of every time I show up at this location. Thank you Nick.

As a first timer in selling, I was a bit apprehensive. I did not know what to expect and was a little worried about a previous reviewers comments. Yes the office was stark and clinical. The staff however, more than made up for any downfall in the decor. Very helpful, polite and understanding to any ‘silly’ questions that were asked. All in all a pleasant experience, and one that should the opportunity arise I would go through again!

My friend and I came here to sell some coins and jewelry. We first saw Scott about some coins. He was very friendly and knew his stuff. Afterwards, he brought us over to Sheila who looked at our jewelry. She was also very nice and professional. We will definitely come back here again. GREAT PLACE!!!!

Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and responsive. Building had great security to helped me feel safe in handling my items.

I am a brazilian and had the chance to deal with Nevada Coin. I was there to sell some gold coins and they paid me the best price I could fetch in Las Vegas. They are professional, courteous and trustworthy. Before visiting their premises I got a tentative appraisal by phone which I found reasonable. In the shop the attendant offered to approach the manager to get me a (gasp) BETTER price. Do yourself a favor and don’t bother talking to their rude and unprofessional competitors. They will treat you like a moron and quote prices accordingly. For Nevada Coin, five Stars all the way.

They took the time to help me sell my item and find an item. The staff does not rush you or pressure you into buying something. They take you on a little adventure by telling you about the items you are selling and looking at…

After visiting a couple of the “traveling gold & silver merchants” who came to Mesquite, I made a call to Nevada Coin & Jewelry in Las Vegas… David was very helpful and professional. Their prices were the best I had seen… I left very satisfied with my trip and the deals we made. I will definitely go there again.

What inspired me to go to NV Coin and Jewelry was I was an ad on the TV for the shop. I was not too sure about going to NV Coin and Jewelry to sell my jewelry because I have been to many other pawn shops but haven’t found a good deal for my jewelry. After I went to Nevada Coin and Jewelry it was a big relief for me selling my jewelry for a good price.

Been living in Vegas for many years and never had to sell or hock any of my items unfortunately as luck would have it that day did eventually find me and let me tell you is it a tough racket to find a decent place out here to do business with. Pawn shops are a joke and could care less about their customers and treated me like another number. Tried and tried and place after place the numbers where all over the place. Finally decided to go to these guys and I’m glad I did. They tested each piece of my jewelry right in from of me with some kind of xray machine. They explained how they calculated the price and paid me cash on the spot. Avery was very helpful and didn’t mind answering my questions and explaining what they do. I left feeling I got the best price for my items. I would recommend them to anyone looking to sell their jewelry.

I recently got divorced so I wanted to get rid of some of the jewelry my ex-husband got me. I found Nevada Coin and jewelry searching the web. When I called the guy that answered the phone was friendly and willing to quote me a price per gram. I went to their store on Flamingo, Avery whom I spoke to on the phone tested my items using some kind of x-ray machine. I could see that some of my jewelry was not the karat I thought (some lower some higher). He paid what he quoted on the phone no bait and switch. It took less than 15 minutes got my cash and got rid of some bad memories. I would recommend this company if you are looking to sell jewelry.

This past Saturday I had the opportunity to meet the owner and team at Nevada Coin and Jewelry. I didn’t know what to expect but they made me feel both comfortable and safe. I went through my collection of jewelry, both broken pieces and things I thought were of no value at all. They took the time to explain what each carat weight was worth and they helped me sort through my items. I was amazed at what they gave me for things I would never wear or use. I would recommend you stop in and speak to them, you might be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
